Coney Island!

Last night can be summed up this way:
  • A fish flop
  • A freak show
  • Funnel cake
  • Puking Nancy
  • Burned out neon
  • BumperCars
  • and an Italian Boardwalk Disco Party!

My friend Grant from The Onion threw this little intern-shindig-reunion together and I'm so glad he did, because it was unbelievably fun!  My expectations of Coney Island were pretty low going in.  I'd only ever been there in daylight hours during the off season.  Summer nights at Coney are an entirely different experience of lights and smells and buzzing excitement.  The crowd level was perfect, too -- just enough people to make it feel like a happenin' place but few enough that you never had to wait to get on a ride.  The place really is as kitschy as I'd heard, but somehow it felt much less scuzzy than the carnival that lands in Helena every summer.  Coney Island is just a tad classier because of its history.

Grant and Julianna, two of my intern friends, had both been there five years ago before the place was gutted.  Although it didn't feel empty to me at all, they say there used to be many more wild old rides and attractions that are slowly being replaced with an open park-space.  Coney Island's future is up in the air like a ride on the Wonder Wheel; it may be closed down, or bought by an entertainment subsidiary of Disney.  But for now, it's classically great and well worth the ride down to Brooklyn's southernmost coast.

^ The Gang, minus Jenna, in the pits.
Riding the Cyclone - the most terrifying, rickety coaster.  It stole my hat.  I liked that hat.

shoot the clowns.  shoot 'em down.

< classic carnyfood

< Jenna & Josh and the kiddie rides

This fish got tossed out as the result of a break-up between the guy who won it and the girl he won it for.  The end of a night at Coney Island can be unpredictable.  We adopted the little guy since he wasn't gonna make it long in the trash.

^ bumber cars, for those without sugar headaches

My first funnel cake! v

Puking Nancy,
the animatronic
"attraction".
Unattractive.
