Boom Boom Boom

In the Sky.

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

I celebrated mine with Allison, Bridget, Drew, Brian, and Megan at Chelsea Pier #63.  The piers are a bunch of public parks on the riverfront of the Hudson.  We arrived at 4:30 to snag good grass, but it wasn't really necessary.  We had a surprising amount of space around our group thanks to crowd control and possibly our own stinkiness (it was hot out!).

We brought a picnic which included Bridget's Rice Crispy Treats (which had melted from a stack of squares into the shape of a stuffed turkey by 6:00), my DangerZone potato salad (which tastes even better today, perhaps thanks to hot mayonnaise...), my Strawberry Shortcakes (the whipped cream turned into sludge and smelled mildly alcoholic despite my attempt to keep it on ice), Drew's Guaca-Hummus, and watermelon, cheese, crackers, cherries, all the good stuff.

The show was sponsored by Macy's and started firing at 9:20 p.m. over the Hudson.  I will say this about Macy's:  they pull out all the stops.  There were fireworks that looked like smiley-faces, fireworks that exploded and drifted incredibly slowly down the sky while remaining lit, fireworks that looked like 3-dimensional diamonds, and of course - your regular run of sparkly popcorn balls.  What was missing?  Definitely the danger factor of Third of July in Butte, the gravel factor of anywhere else in Montana, and the berry flag cake that we always make at home.  It was still a very decent way to spend the holiday, though.
